Tesla tyres: why they wear fast and what replacements cost
Weight, instant torque and big wheels all shorten tyre life on a Model 3 or Model Y. We priced a fitted set for every factory wheel size.
Quick answers
- A fitted set of four budget tyres for a Tesla costs from about £280 to £456 at Blackcircles in November 2026, depending on wheel size.
- A set of Michelin tyres costs about £748 on the Model 3's 18-inch wheels and about £1,322 on the Model Y Performance's 21-inch wheels, a gap of £574.
- A Tesla Model Y weighs 1,884kg to 2,072kg, and Emissions Analytics found that every extra 500kg raises tyre wear emissions by 21%.
- Tesla recommends rotating tyres every 6,250 miles, or sooner if tread depths differ by 1.5mm or more.
- Tesla advises replacing a tyre at 3mm of tread, well above the UK legal minimum of 1.6mm.
- The Model 3 and Model Y Performance run different tyre sizes front and rear, so you cannot swap tyres between the axles to even out wear.
Tesla tyres wear quickly because the cars are heavy and deliver their torque instantly, and a fitted set of four costs from about £280 for budget tyres to about £1,322 for Michelins on a Model Y Performance in November 2026. Wheel size decides most of the bill: the bigger the rim, the more you pay.
Why do Tesla tyres wear out so fast?
Three things work against a Tesla’s tyres: weight, torque and wheel size.
Weight. A Tesla Model Y weighs between 1,884kg (Long Range RWD) and 2,072kg (Performance AWD), according to VehicleScore. Much of that is the battery. Emissions Analytics, an independent testing firm, found that every extra 500kg of vehicle weight raises tyre wear emissions by 21%. More mass pressing on the same patch of rubber means more of it scrubs away with every corner and stop.
Torque. Electric motors deliver full pulling power from a standstill. Emissions Analytics says tyre wear increases “with vehicle mass and aggressiveness of driving style”, and that greater mass combined with more torque “can lead to rapidly increasing tire particulate emissions”. If you use the instant acceleration often, you pay for it in tread.
Wheel size and tyre type. Larger wheels need lower-profile, wider tyres, which cost more and leave less sidewall to absorb potholes. Performance versions use high-grip summer tyres with softer compounds. Bigger wheels also cut range, so you pay twice.
There is good news in the same research. Emissions Analytics found that a gentle driver who makes full use of regenerative braking “can more than cancel out” the tyre wear caused by the extra battery weight. How you drive matters more than the badge.
What size tyres does my Tesla use?
Tesla fits 18-inch to 21-inch wheels across the current Model 3 and Model Y. The Performance versions of both run a “staggered” set-up, with wider tyres on the rear axle than the front.
| Model and wheel | Tyre size |
|---|---|
| Model 3 Standard and Premium, 18-inch | 235/45 R18 |
| Model 3 Premium, 19-inch | 235/40 R19 |
| Model 3 Performance, 20-inch | 235/35 R20 front, 275/30 R20 rear |
| Model Y, 19-inch | 255/45 R19 |
| Model Y Premium, 20-inch | 255/40 R20 |
| Model Y Performance, 21-inch | 255/35 R21 front, 275/35 R21 rear |
Sizes are from tiresize.com for 2026 cars and Michelin for the Model 3 Performance. In the UK, Carwow lists 18-inch Photon wheels on the Model 3 Standard and 19-inch Crossflow wheels on the Model Y Standard. Always check the size on your current tyre sidewall or the placard in the door frame before ordering, because older cars and optional wheels differ.
How much do replacement Tesla tyres cost?
EV Compared calculated the cost of a fitted set of four for every factory Tesla wheel size. Method: Blackcircles fully fitted price per tyre on 1 November 2026 (including fitting, balancing, valve and disposal) multiplied by four, or two front plus two rear for staggered cars, with no multi-buy discount.
| Wheel size | Budget set | Cheapest major-brand set | Michelin set |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model 3, 18-inch | £293 | £540 (Hankook) | £748 (CrossClimate 3) |
| Model 3, 19-inch | £280 | £661 (Goodyear) | £808 (Pilot Sport 5) |
| Model 3 Performance, 20-inch | £340 | £828 (Hankook) | £1,204 (Pilot Sport 4 S) |
| Model Y, 19-inch | £395 | £716 (Hankook) | £856 (Pilot Sport 4 SUV) |
| Model Y, 20-inch | £360 | £820 (Continental) | £988 (Pilot Sport 5) |
| Model Y Performance, 21-inch | £456 | £1,019 (Hankook) | £1,322 (Pilot Sport 4 S) |
The 21-inch Model Y Performance set costs £574 more than the Model 3’s 18-inch Michelin set, and the Performance cars pay heavily for their rear tyres: a single Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S in 275/30 R20 for the Model 3 Performance is £344.99 fitted, against £256.99 for the front size. If you want a tyre designed for electric cars, the Michelin Pilot Sport EV Acoustic is £279.99 fitted in the Model Y’s 20-inch size, or about £1,120 a set.
Tesla chose 18-inch wheels for the UK Model 3 Standard, which costs £37,990, partly because they “promise cheaper replacement tyres”, according to Motoring Research. Our figures bear that out. If tyre costs worry you, the wheel option box is the place to save. Our guide on which Tesla to buy covers the trade-offs between versions.
Are budget tyres a false economy on a Tesla?
Budget tyres are legal and roughly half the price of a major brand in most Tesla sizes, but they are a weaker choice on a heavy, powerful car. Premium tyres generally offer better wet grip and lower road noise, and noise matters more in an EV with no engine to mask it. The cheapest major-brand set in our table costs about £250 to £560 more than a budget set, which is a modest premium on a car that costs £37,990 or more new.
Whatever you choose, keep the same model and tread depth across the car where you can. Tesla’s service manual says ride quality and handling “are maximized when all 4 tires are the same age, model, and tread depth”.
How often should you rotate and replace Tesla tyres?
Tesla’s service manual recommends:
- Rotation every 6,250 miles (10,000km), or sooner if the tread depth on any two tyres differs by 1.5mm or more.
- Replacement when any tread depth reaches 3mm, measured at the outer, centre and inner tread.
That 3mm guidance is nearly twice the UK legal minimum of 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread. Driving below 1.6mm can mean a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre, Cornwall Council warns.
Staggered Performance cars cannot swap tyres between the front and rear axles because the sizes differ, so the rear tyres, which take the drive and are wider, often need replacing first. Measure the inner edge as well as the centre: uneven wear across the tread is a sign the alignment needs checking, and it is easy to miss if you only look at the outside of the tyre.
How can you make Tesla tyres last longer?
Most of the savings come from habits that cost nothing:
- Use Chill acceleration mode for everyday driving, and save full power for when you need it.
- Lean on regenerative braking and drive smoothly, which Emissions Analytics found can offset the extra battery weight.
- Keep pressures at the figure on the door placard, checked cold, at least monthly.
- Rotate on schedule if your tyres are the same size front and rear.
- Choose smaller wheels when buying new or used, since an 18-inch or 19-inch set costs hundreds less to replace.
Factor tyres in alongside servicing costs and the other hidden costs of owning an electric car. If you are buying second-hand, check tread depth on all four tyres, including the inner edges, as part of our used Tesla Model Y buying guide. A worn set can add up to £1,322 to the real price of the car.

Frequently asked questions
How much do Tesla tyres cost in the UK?
A fitted set of four costs from about £280 to £1,322 at Blackcircles in November 2026. Budget brands start at about £280 for the Model 3's 19-inch size, while Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres for the Model Y Performance's 21-inch wheels cost about £1,322. Most Model 3 and Model Y owners on 18-inch or 19-inch wheels will pay £540 to £860 for a set from a major brand.
Why do Tesla tyres wear out so fast?
Tesla tyres wear faster mainly because the cars are heavy and deliver their torque instantly. A Model Y weighs 1,884kg to 2,072kg, and Emissions Analytics testing found tyre wear emissions rise 21% for every extra 500kg. Hard acceleration multiplies that effect, while smooth driving with regenerative braking reduces it.
How often should I rotate Tesla tyres?
Tesla recommends rotating tyres every 6,250 miles (10,000km), or sooner if the tread depth on any two tyres differs by 1.5mm or more. Cars with different front and rear tyre sizes, such as the Model 3 and Model Y Performance, cannot swap tyres between axles.
When should I replace Tesla tyres?
Tesla recommends replacing a tyre when any part of the tread is down to 3mm. The UK legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, and driving below it can cost up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre.
Do Teslas need special tyres?
No, a Tesla does not need special tyres, but it does need the correct size, load rating and speed rating for the car. EV-focused tyres such as the Michelin Pilot Sport EV are available in some Tesla sizes, at £279.99 fitted in the Model Y's 20-inch size, but standard premium tyres in the right specification fit and are legal.
Are smaller wheels cheaper for tyres on a Tesla?
Yes, smaller wheels mean cheaper tyres. A Michelin set for the Model 3's 18-inch wheels costs about £748, against about £988 for a Model Y on 20-inch wheels and £1,322 for the 21-inch Performance, based on Blackcircles fitted prices in November 2026.
