Used Tesla Model Y buying guide: years, faults and prices
Every UK Model Y year from the 2022 launch to the 2025 refresh, the faults and recalls to check, and asking prices by year from our listings snapshot.
Quick answers
- On a snapshot of 27 used Model Y listings at cinch on 1 November 2026, asking prices ran from £20,499 to £37,999, with a median of £22,999.
- The 12 cars from 2022 had a median asking price of £21,899 and a median of about 65,200 miles, while the 11 cars from 2023 had a median of £23,499 and 42,702 miles.
- A 2022 Long Range AWD launched at £54,990, and its median asking price in our snapshot was £21,799, about 40% of that launch price.
- The entry Rear-Wheel Drive arrived at £51,990 in late 2022 with 283 miles of WLTP range, and Tesla cut it to £44,990 on 13 January 2023.
- The refreshed Model Y went on sale with deliveries from June 2025, raising the Rear-Wheel Drive's range to 311 miles and the Long Range AWD's to 353 miles.
- ADAC measured a 2022 Model Y battery at 91% to 92% health after 100,000 km and 86% after about 140,000 km.
- A Model Y registered before 1 April 2025 pays the £200 standard vehicle tax rate with no expensive car supplement, but a later car listed above £50,000 adds £440 a year.
A used Tesla Model Y costs from about £20,500 in November 2026, and a 2023 car is the sweet spot: in our snapshot of 27 listings it asked a median of £23,499 with far fewer miles than a 2022 car. Check the charging port, the boot seals, the battery health and any open recalls before you pay.
The Model Y has been on UK roads since February 2022, so the used market now runs from early Shanghai-built Long Range cars to the refreshed 2025 model. This guide covers each year, the faults owners and inspectors report, and what each year is asking on a dealer site today. EV Compared has not inspected these cars; the fault list comes from the sources at the foot of the page.
What are the Model Y years in the UK?
The UK Model Y splits into three phases: the 2022 launch cars, the 2023 to early 2025 cars with lower prices and a Berlin-built option, and the refreshed car delivered from June 2025.
| Year | What arrived | Price when new | WLTP range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 (from 16 February) | Long Range AWD and Performance, built in Shanghai | £54,990 and £64,990 | 331 and 319 miles |
| Late 2022 | Rear-Wheel Drive, built in Shanghai | £51,990 | 283 miles |
| 13 January 2023 | Price cuts across the range | RWD £44,990, Performance £59,990 | Unchanged |
| 2023 to 2025 | Later pre-facelift cars, many from Berlin | Varied with Tesla’s price changes | Unchanged |
| June 2025 | Refreshed Model Y deliveries begin | RWD £44,990, Long Range RWD £48,990, Launch Series £60,990 | 311, 387 and 353 miles (Long Range AWD) |
The launch figures come from electrive, the Rear-Wheel Drive details from Electrifying, the January 2023 cuts from EV Fleet World and the refresh from Carbuyer. The 331-mile Long Range figure is on 20-inch wheels; on 19-inch wheels it was 351 miles. The cheaper Model Y Standard arrived at the end of 2025, so few are yet on the used market.
What does a used Model Y cost by year?
On 1 November 2026, cinch listed 27 used Model Ys, from £20,499 to £37,999, with a median of £22,999. We grouped every listing by year.
| Year | Cars listed | Asking price range | Median asking price | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 12 | £20,499 to £25,999 | £21,899 | about 65,200 |
| 2023 | 11 | £20,699 to £26,499 | £23,499 | 42,702 |
| 2024 | 2 | £24,999 (RWD) and £31,999 (Performance) | Too few to call | 22,788 and 28,441 |
| 2025 | 2 | £31,999 and £37,999 | Too few to call | 20,758 and 19,343 |
Method: every Model Y listed on cinch on 1 November 2026, grouped by registration year, median of the asking prices (which include cinch’s £99 admin fee).
Two things stand out. First, the gap between years is small: a 2023 car asks a median £1,600 more than a 2022 car, but has covered about 22,500 fewer miles. Second, the 2022 Long Range AWD has lost the most. Its 11 examples asked a median of £21,799, which is about 40% of its £54,990 launch price (£21,799 divided by £54,990). The six 2023 Rear-Wheel Drive cars asked a median of £23,249, about 52% of the £44,990 they cost after the January 2023 cut.
This is one dealer’s stock on one day, so treat it as a guide to the shape of the market rather than a valuation. Private sales and part-exchange prices will sit below these dealer figures.
Which used Model Y year should you buy?
For most buyers, a 2023 car is the best balance of price, mileage and build quality.
- 2022 Long Range AWD: the cheapest way into a Model Y, but most examples have covered 60,000 miles or more. Early cars came from Shanghai, and EV Powered says the later Berlin-built pre-facelift cars have better fit and finish.
- 2023 Rear-Wheel Drive: the lowest-mileage cars in our snapshot at around £23,000, with 283 miles of WLTP range. Fine if most of your charging is at home.
- 2023 Long Range AWD: the pick for motorway drivers, with a median of £24,999 in our snapshot for five cars.
- Performance: quicker, but stiffer and rarer. Check the rear spoiler (see below).
- 2025 refreshed car: quieter, with ventilated front seats, a rear touchscreen and more range, but still priced well above the older cars.
If you are also weighing up the smaller saloon, our used Tesla Model 3 buying guide covers the same ground for that car.
What faults should you check on a used Model Y?
Check the charging port, paint, boot seals, window regulators and Bluetooth on every car, and the rear spoiler on a Performance. EV Powered lists these as the recurring Model Y faults:
- Charging port: faults can cause slow, intermittent or failed charging. Plug the car in on a test drive if you can.
- Paint: it is prone to stone chips, swirl marks and scratches, so look closely at the bonnet and front bumper.
- Boot leaks and panel gaps: early cars can let water into the boot through rubber seals and uneven panel gaps. Lift the boot floor and feel for damp.
- Window regulators: on early cars the windows can wobble or rattle. Run every window up and down.
- Bluetooth: phone connections to the touchscreen can be glitchy.
- Performance rear spoiler: the carbon fibre spoiler is held on with double-sided tape and can come loose.
EV Powered also counts five UK recalls since the car arrived, including a front suspension link torque problem and a rear-view camera failure. Enter the registration on the DVSA recall checker, which shows any unresolved safety recalls and the full MOT history. Our wider used Tesla checklist covers the history check and the Tesla app service record.
If the car has Full Self-Driving (Supervised) or Enhanced Autopilot fitted, confirm it shows in the car’s software. In the UK these are driver assistance systems that need your full attention and hands on the wheel; our guide to Autopilot and FSD in the UK explains what works here.
How healthy is a used Model Y battery?
Most used Model Ys should be at around 90% battery health or better. ADAC’s long-term 2022 Model Y, reported by InsideEVs, measured 91% to 92% after 100,000 km (62,000 miles) and 86% after about 140,000 km (87,000 miles). Its peak charging speed fell from 257 kW to just over 200 kW, so a high-mileage car may also take longer at a Supercharger.
That is one car, driven hard with frequent fast charging, so lower-mileage cars should do better. Ask for a battery health report before you agree a price; our guide on how to check an EV battery before buying used explains the options.
What does a used Model Y cost to run?
At ADAC’s 2.93 miles per kWh, a used Model Y costs about 2.7p a mile to charge at home on an 8p/kWh off-peak tariff, and about 27p a mile on a 79p/kWh public rapid charger. Method: pence per kWh divided by 2.93 miles per kWh. On the 26.32p/kWh price cap rate it is about 9p a mile. Over 10,000 miles, that is roughly £273 charging off-peak at home against £2,696 on public rapids.
Vehicle tax depends on the registration date. Electric cars registered from 1 April 2017 pay the £200 standard rate, according to gov.uk, so every pre-facelift Model Y registered before 1 April 2025 pays £200 with no supplement. A car registered from 1 April 2025 with a list price above £50,000 pays an extra £440 a year from the second to the sixth year of tax (rate tables). That catches the £60,990 Launch Series, and a Long Range car whose options pushed its list price over £50,000, so ask the seller for the original list price.
Insurance is the other big cost. Best Chargers has a guide to Tesla insurance in the UK.
Is a used Model Y still under warranty?
Most used Model Ys are still covered for the battery and drive unit, but many have left the basic warranty. EV Powered gives the terms as four years or 50,000 miles for the basic vehicle warranty, and eight years or 120,000 miles for the battery and drive unit on Long Range and Performance cars. A 2022 car is past four years old, and a 2023 car with more than 50,000 miles is also outside the basic cover, so price in the cost of any repair a full inspection turns up.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best year for a used Tesla Model Y?
For most buyers, a 2023 car is the best year, because it combines a lower mileage than most 2022 cars with a median asking price only £1,600 higher in our 1 November 2026 snapshot. Later pre-facelift cars were built in Berlin, which EV Powered says brought better fit and finish than the early Shanghai-built cars.
How much is a used Tesla Model Y in the UK?
A used Tesla Model Y costs from about £20,500 for a high-mileage 2022 car. In our snapshot of 27 cinch listings on 1 November 2026, prices ran from £20,499 to £37,999, with 2022 cars at a median of £21,899 and 2023 cars at £23,499.
What are the common problems with a used Tesla Model Y?
The common problems are charging port faults, Bluetooth glitches, soft paint that chips easily, boot water leaks and rattling window regulators on early cars, and a loose rear spoiler on the Performance. EV Powered also counted five UK recalls, including a front suspension link and a rear-view camera fault.
How much battery does a used Model Y lose?
A used Model Y typically keeps around 90% of its battery capacity at 100,000 km, on the evidence of ADAC's long-term car, which measured 91% to 92% at that point. The same 2022 car dropped to 86% at about 140,000 km, and its peak charging speed fell from 257 kW to just over 200 kW.
Is a used Tesla Model Y still under warranty?
Yes, most used Model Ys are still inside their battery and drive unit warranty, which EV Powered gives as eight years or 120,000 miles for Long Range and Performance cars. The basic vehicle warranty is four years or 50,000 miles, so many 2022 and higher-mileage 2023 cars are now outside it.
Does a used Model Y pay the expensive car supplement?
No, not if it was registered before 1 April 2025, because those cars pay only the £200 standard rate. A Model Y registered from 1 April 2025 with a list price above £50,000, such as the £60,990 Launch Series, pays an extra £440 a year from the second to the sixth year of tax.
