Used Tesla Model 3 buying guide: years, faults and prices
Which Model 3 years to look for, which recalls and faults to check, and what dealers are asking for each year, from a snapshot of 70 used cars on 1 November 2026.
Quick answers
- In our snapshot of 70 used Model 3s listed by Motorpoint and Cinch on 1 November 2026, the median asking price was £17,499 for a 2019 car, £19,199 for a 2021 car, £21,899 for a 2022 car and £28,924 for a 2024 car.
- The cheapest Model 3 in the snapshot was £15,999, and a nearly new 2026 car listed at a median £33,074, against £37,990 for a new Model 3 Standard on Carwow in November 2026.
- Between 2024 and 2021 cars, median asking prices fall by about £3,240 for each year of age, so the 2021 and 2022 cars offer the most car for the money.
- The China-built Standard Range Plus sold from November 2020 to December 2021 has an LFP battery, a heat pump and 170 kW peak charging, according to EV Database.
- Tesla's basic warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles, and the battery and motors are covered for 8 years and 100,000 miles, or 120,000 miles on Long Range cars, so a 2019 car's battery cover ends during 2027.
- Recalls on the Model 3 have included a steering column bolt in 2020, front suspension lateral links and side airbags in 2021, and the rear-view camera harness in 2022, so check every car's registration on GOV.UK.
- The Model 3 was the overall winner of the 2026 Driver Power survey of more than 100,000 UK owners, topping the Quality and Reliability category.
A used Tesla Model 3 costs from about £16,000, and the sweet spot is a 2021 or 2022 car at a median £19,199 to £21,899 in our snapshot of 70 dealer listings on 1 November 2026. Check the recall record, the MOT history and the battery warranty date before you pay.
The Model 3 is the most common used Tesla in the UK, which gives you plenty of choice. It also changed a lot between 2019 and 2026, with new batteries, a facelift and the loss of some equipment, so the year and version matter as much as the mileage.
How much is a used Tesla Model 3 by year?
On 1 November 2026 we took every used Model 3 listed on Motorpoint (27 cars) and Cinch (43 cars) and grouped them by year. Method: median asking price of the 70 listed cars for each year; Motorpoint gives the registration year, Cinch gives the vehicle year, and Cinch prices include its £99 admin fee.
| Year | Cars in snapshot | Lowest price | Median price | Highest price | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 5 | £15,999 | £17,499 | £21,999 | 48,160 |
| 2020 | 4 | £16,399 | £17,349 | £18,699 | 47,180 |
| 2021 | 23 | £15,999 | £19,199 | £26,299 | 38,523 |
| 2022 | 20 | £17,999 | £21,899 | £24,949 | 34,191 |
| 2023 | 8 | £19,499 | £26,374 | £27,149 | 27,877 |
| 2024 | 6 | £25,899 | £28,924 | £33,649 | 21,740 |
| 2025 | 2 | £28,899 | £29,874 | £30,849 | 18,164 |
| 2026 | 2 | £32,499 | £33,074 | £33,649 | 5,623 |
Three things stand out. First, 2019 and 2020 cars sit close together at around £17,400, so a 2020 car costs no more and has had the 2020 model year upgrades. Second, the median falls by about £3,240 for each year of age between 2024 and 2021 cars (£28,924 minus £19,199, divided by three years). Third, a nearly new 2026 car at a median £33,074 is about £4,900 below the £37,990 list price of a new Model 3 Standard on Carwow in November 2026, though the used cars are listed as the RWD version rather than the Standard.
The 2025 and 2026 rows rest on two cars each, so treat them as a guide only. These are dealer asking prices; private sales will often be lower.
Which Model 3 years and versions should you look for?
The Model 3 went on sale in the UK in 2019 as the Standard Range Plus (54 kWh, rear-wheel drive, 258 miles WLTP), Long Range (75 kWh, all-wheel drive, 348 miles) and Performance (329 miles), according to EV Powered. The main changes since then:
- 2020 model year: a mild facelift with black exterior trim and a better interior. WLTP range rose to 267 miles for the Standard Range Plus, 360 for the Long Range and 352 for the Performance, which gained an 82 kWh battery.
- November 2020 to December 2021: the China-built Standard Range Plus switched to an LFP battery with 52.5 kWh usable, a heat pump as standard, 170 kW peak charging and 278 miles WLTP, at £40,990 new (EV Database). LFP cells are happy to be charged to 100% regularly.
- April 2021: Tesla removed the radar used by adaptive cruise, and in May 2021 the passenger lumbar support.
- October 2022: ultrasonic parking sensors were dropped in favour of camera-based Tesla Vision.
- October 2023: the facelifted Model 3, developed as Project Highland, opened for UK orders at £39,990 for rear-wheel drive and £49,990 for all-wheel drive (InsideEVs).
For most buyers a 2021 or 2022 car is the best value: it has the 2020 upgrades, it still has battery warranty to 2029 or 2030, and there are more of them for sale than any other year. If you want the heat pump and LFP battery, check the VIN or the car’s build country, because the LFP version was made in China. If you need more range than a Standard Range Plus, see how the Model 3 compares with its closest used rival in used Tesla Model 3 vs used Polestar 2.
What faults and recalls affect the Model 3?
The Model 3’s weak points are trim and build quality on early cars, plus a handful of recalls, rather than the battery or motors. EV Powered lists rattly trim, uneven panel gaps, blistering paintwork and low-grade synthetic leather on early cars, and inconsistent quality from Tesla Service.
It also lists recalls on UK cars:
| Year | Recall |
|---|---|
| 2020 | Steering column bolt that may not have been fitted |
| 2021 | Front suspension lateral link torque; side airbag deployment |
| 2022 | Rear-view camera harness failure; speed display |
Put the registration into the GOV.UK recall checker, which shows outstanding safety recalls along with the MOT history. A recalled part should be fixed by the manufacturer, usually at no cost. Then read the full MOT history, which shows the recorded mileage at every test and, in Great Britain, the parts that failed or had minor problems. Repeated tyre or suspension advisories point to a car that has been driven hard. On the car itself, look along the panel gaps, check the paint on the lower doors, listen for rattles on a rough road, and try every door handle and window. Our used Tesla checklist covers the full inspection.
Is a used Model 3 reliable?
Owners say so. The Model 3 was the overall winner of the 2026 Driver Power survey and finished first for Quality and Reliability (Auto Express). Carwow ranked it first of the ten most reliable cars in the same survey, with a score of 90.54%, from more than 100,000 drivers. That is an owner satisfaction result, not a fault count, so it does not replace an inspection of the car you are buying.
How much warranty does a used Model 3 have left?
The battery and motors usually still have cover; the rest of the car often does not. Tesla’s basic warranty runs for 4 years or 50,000 miles, and the battery and drive unit for 8 years and 100,000 miles, or 120,000 miles on Long Range models (Carbuyer).
| First registered | Basic warranty (4 years) | Battery and motors (8 years) |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | Ended in 2023 | Ends in 2027 |
| 2021 | Ended in 2025 | Ends in 2029 |
| 2022 | Ends in 2026 | Ends in 2030 |
| 2024 | Ends in 2028 | Ends in 2032 |
The mileage limit applies too, so a 2021 Standard Range Plus with 80,000 miles has 20,000 miles of battery cover left even though the date runs to 2029. Ask for a battery health report before buying; our guide to checking an EV battery before you buy explains how.
What does a used Model 3 cost to charge?
A full charge of the 52.5 kWh LFP Standard Range Plus costs about £4.20 at home on an 8p/kWh smart tariff, £13.82 at the 26.32p/kWh price cap and £41.48 at a 79p/kWh public rapid charger. Method: 52.5 kWh multiplied by each rate, ignoring charging losses. Our guide to the cost to charge a Tesla covers Supercharger prices and the bigger batteries.
Used or new?
A 2022 car at a median £21,899 costs about £16,000 less than a new Model 3 Standard at £37,990, and the battery warranty still has around four years to run. A new car brings the facelifted cabin, a full 4-year warranty and 332 miles of range on Carwow’s figures. Our page on current Tesla prices lists every new version, and if you need more space, the used Tesla Model Y buying guide does the same job for the SUV.
How we test and where our numbers come from
Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications. We re-check every guide when pricing, specification or policy changes. Last checked 1 November 2026. How we work out our own figures.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a used Tesla Model 3 in the UK?
A used Tesla Model 3 costs from about £16,000 for a 2019 or 2020 car to about £33,000 for a nearly new 2026 car. In our 70-car snapshot on 1 November 2026, the median asking price was £19,199 for a 2021 car and £21,899 for a 2022 car.
What is the best year for a used Tesla Model 3?
For most buyers the best years are 2021 and 2022, which list at a median £19,199 and £21,899 in our snapshot. Cars from the 2020 model year onwards gained more range and a better interior, and the China-built Standard Range Plus from November 2020 adds an LFP battery and a heat pump.
What are the common problems with a used Tesla Model 3?
The main problems are build quality on early cars, such as rattly trim, uneven panel gaps and blistering paint, plus recalls on the steering column bolt, front suspension lateral links, side airbags and rear-view camera harness. Check the MOT history for tyre and suspension advisories, and check the car's registration for outstanding recalls on GOV.UK.
Is a used Tesla Model 3 reliable?
Yes, by owner surveys: the Model 3 was the overall winner of the 2026 Driver Power survey and came first for Quality and Reliability. Carwow put its reliability score at 90.54%, top of the ten most reliable cars in the same survey of more than 100,000 drivers.
Does a used Tesla Model 3 still have warranty?
The battery and motors usually still have warranty, because they are covered for 8 years and 100,000 miles, or 120,000 miles on Long Range cars. The 4-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty has run out on 2019 to 2021 cars and runs out during 2026 on 2022 cars, so budget for repairs outside the drivetrain.
Do used Model 3s have parking sensors?
Not all of them: Tesla replaced the ultrasonic parking sensors with its camera-based Tesla Vision system from October 2022. It also removed the radar used by adaptive cruise in April 2021, so check what a specific car has before you buy.
