  • The iX5 60 xDrive is the only version at launch, with a 141kWh battery, 578hp and up to 525 miles of range.
  • It charges at up to 460kW on an 800V system, with a 10 to 80% top-up in about 23 minutes.
  • BMW has not confirmed a UK price; the rival Range Rover Sport Electric starts at £109,810.
  • Customer deliveries in Europe are scheduled to begin in early 2027, so a car ordered now is unlikely to arrive this year.

The fully electric BMW iX5 is due to open for orders on 8 October 2026, with the 60 xDrive the only version available at launch (electrive). It has a 141kWh battery and a quoted range of up to 525 miles. The catch for UK buyers is that BMW has not confirmed a UK price or a UK order date, and production does not begin until December. What has BMW confirmed so far?

Orders for the iX5 60 xDrive are due to open on 8 October, and production is due to start in December, according to electrive. BMW has not confirmed a UK-specific order date. BMW plans to open its European configurator on the same day, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin in early 2027 (BMWBlog). In practical terms, an order placed this month is unlikely to turn into a delivery before the new year.

BMW UK also published a video walkaround of the electric X5 on 24 September (BMWBlog). Only the 60 xDrive is available at launch, with other versions likely later.

What do the specs look like?

The iX5 is the first fully electric X5. It uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive system on an 800V architecture, with two motors and all-wheel drive.

A 460kW peak rate is only usable at the most powerful chargers. At a typical 150kW rapid unit the car will charge much more slowly, so check what is near your regular routes.

How much will the iX5 cost?

BMW has not confirmed a UK price. EV Database shows an estimated UK on-the-road price that BMW has not confirmed. We are not treating that estimate as a price. Whatever BMW announces, this is a large, long-range SUV at the top of the market, so the Electric Car Grant, which is limited to cheaper cars, is unlikely to apply, though BMW has not said. Our guide to who qualifies for the grant explains the rules.

How does it compare with its rivals?

The closest UK rival on paper is the Range Rover Sport Electric, which went on order on 30 September. It starts at £109,810 for the Dynamic SE, rising to £122,780 for the Autobiography and £126,290 for the First Edition. It has 550hp, a 118.5kWh battery and up to 378 miles of WLTP range (Electrifying). Our own coverage has the Range Rover Sport Electric UK price in full.

Range (WLTP)Up to 525 milesUp to 378 miles

On the quoted figures the BMW has a battery about 22kWh larger and nearly 150 miles more claimed range. Whether it undercuts the Range Rover depends entirely on the UK price BMW announces. For other big electric SUVs see our long-range electric SUV ranking.

What is still unknown?

BMW has not yet detailed UK trims, standard equipment or finance offers for the iX5, and it has not said how many cars will be allocated to the UK in the first production months. Running costs matter too: with a battery of this size, home charging will cost far more per fill than a small EV, so a home charger and a smart tariff are worth planning before delivery. Official figures for real-world efficiency will only emerge once independent tests start.

What this means for you

If you want an iX5, there is no rush to order as soon as books open. Deliveries are not due until early 2027, so wait for the UK price and trim details before putting down a deposit. If you are a company car driver, our explainer on the benefit in kind rate for electric cars shows how tax is worked out.

If you need a large electric SUV sooner, the Range Rover Sport Electric is already on order. Keep an eye on every new electric car launching for dates as they firm up.

How we test and where our numbers come from

Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications. We re-check every guide when pricing, specification or policy changes. Last checked 6 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

When can I order the BMW iX5?

BMW plans to open the European configurator for the iX5 60 xDrive on 8 October 2026, according to BMWBlog and electrive. BMW has not confirmed a separate UK order date. Production is due to start in December, with customer deliveries scheduled for early 2027.

How much will the BMW iX5 cost in the UK?

BMW has not confirmed a UK price. EV Database lists an estimated UK price, but it is not confirmed by BMW.

How far can the BMW iX5 go on a charge?

BMW quotes up to 525 miles of WLTP range for the iX5 60 xDrive, from a 141kWh battery, according to Electrek. That is the best case, so expect less at motorway speeds in winter.

How fast does the BMW iX5 charge?

It supports 800V charging at up to 460kW, which BMW says gives a 10 to 80% charge in around 23 minutes. You will need a high-power CCS2 charger to see those speeds.

Which version of the iX5 is available first?

Only the 60 xDrive is on sale at launch. It has two motors, all-wheel drive and a combined 578hp. Other versions are likely later, but BMW has not confirmed them.
