Porsche plans a petrol Macan-sized SUV for 2028 as EV sales fall

Porsche's new chief executive says a combustion SUV in the Macan class arrives by 2028 beside the electric Macan, and the 911 will not go fully electric, days after Volkswagen booked a €6bn charge on Porsche. What it means for UK Macan Electric and Taycan buyers.

Quick answers

  • Porsche chief executive Michael Leiters has said a combustion SUV in the Macan segment will arrive in 2028, sold alongside the electric Macan. Reports differ on whether it will be badged Macan.
  • Leiters has said the 911 will not become fully electric, and Porsche is continuing with an electric 718 and the Taycan.
  • On 18 September 2026 Volkswagen announced a non-cash goodwill charge of about €6bn on Porsche and cut its 2026 operating return on sales outlook to up to 1%, from 4.0 to 5.5%.
  • Electric Macan sales fell about 40% in the first half of 2026, according to Motor.es, while Porsche's total deliveries fell 16%.
  • In the UK the Macan Electric starts at £68,600 and the Taycan at £88,200, before options.

Porsche chief executive Michael Leiters has said a combustion SUV in the Macan class will arrive in 2028 alongside the electric Macan, and that the 911 will not become fully electric (Motor1). It follows Volkswagen’s 18 September announcement of a charge of about €6bn against Porsche and a 16% fall in Porsche’s first-half deliveries. For UK buyers, it raises questions about how EV-only model plans hold up and how used electric Porsches will be valued.

What has Porsche changed?

The electric Macan has been sold alongside the combustion Macan since 2024, but the combustion car went out of production in July 2026 (Motor1). Leiters now says a combustion model returns in 2028 as an addition to the electric car, not a replacement for it (motor16). Reports say it will be based on the Audi Q5 platform (Motor.es).

The name is not settled in the reports we found. Motor1’s September headline says the gas Macan is coming back, but earlier Motor1 and Autoblog coverage said the new car would carry a different name, with the Macan badge staying on the electric model. Treat “petrol Macan” as shorthand until Porsche confirms the badge.

On the rest of the range, Leiters has said the 911 will be developed with combustion and hybrid technology, with an electric 718 and the Taycan continuing. Motor1 frames Porsche’s message as not anti-EV, but willing to offer combustion cars where customers want them.

Why did Volkswagen write down Porsche?

On 18 September 2026 Volkswagen said an update to Porsche’s long-term planning changed the assumptions behind its valuation, including a medium-term margin corridor of 10% to 15%, triggering an impairment test and a non-cash goodwill charge of about €6bn in the third quarter. It now expects 2026 operating return on sales of up to 1%, against a previous forecast of 4.0% to 5.5% (Tiger Brokers). Volkswagen also pointed to weakness in China and what it called an accelerated shift in demand towards battery-electric vehicles (Just Auto).

Porsche H1 2026 deliveries122,306, down 16%
Electric Macan sales, H1 2026Down about 40% (Motor.es)

Porsche attributes its first-half decline to the end of the combustion 718, strong electric Macan demand a year earlier, and the expiry of US tax incentives (Porsche Newsroom). The electric Macan fall is reported by Motor.es, which we could not match to a Porsche figure.

What does it mean for the Macan Electric and Taycan?

Neither car is being withdrawn. In the UK the Macan Electric starts at £68,600 (Parkers) and the Taycan at £88,200 (Porsche UK entry price, as of May 2026). Those are list prices before options. The Electric Car Grant is limited to cheaper cars, so it does not apply at this end of the market and any discount comes from the dealer.

A combustion model in 2028 could be cheaper to build and sold from the same showroom. For used electric buyers that is a possible risk, since a combustion sibling can weaken demand for the electric one. We found no residual value data published since the announcement, so this is our judgement rather than a measured trend. Our guide to which EVs hold their value explains the usual drivers.

Can EV-only plans be trusted?

Porsche ended combustion Macan production in July 2026 and has now said a combustion model returns within about two years. That shows how quickly a powertrain plan can change when sales move. The UK’s ZEV mandate still sets electric sales targets for manufacturers, so a combustion Porsche arriving in 2028 will be sold in a market with those rules in place. The practical lesson is to treat any maker’s long-range powertrain promise as a plan, not a guarantee, and judge a car on what it offers today.

What this means for you

If you already own a Macan Electric or Taycan, nothing changes today: Porsche has said both continue. If you are thinking of buying one, it is worth negotiating, in our view, because the electric Macan’s sales have weakened. Check monthly cost against depreciation before choosing between new and nearly new, and wait for 2028 only if you specifically want a combustion Porsche in this class.

How we test and where our numbers come from

Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications. We re-check every guide when pricing, specification or policy changes. Last checked 6 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is Porsche bringing back a petrol Macan?

Porsche's chief executive Michael Leiters has said a combustion SUV for the Macan segment arrives in 2028 and will be sold alongside the electric Macan. Motor1 headlined its report that the gas Macan is coming back, but earlier Motor1 and Autoblog reports said the new car would use a different name while the Macan badge stays on the electric model. Porsche has not confirmed the name in the sources we found.

Will there be an electric Porsche 911?

No. Leiters has said the 911 will be developed with combustion and hybrid technology, not as a fully electric car. Porsche is continuing with an electric 718 and the Taycan.

Why did Volkswagen write down Porsche?

Volkswagen said on 18 September 2026 that an update to Porsche's long-term planning changed the assumptions behind its valuation, including the medium-term margin corridor of 10% to 15%. That triggered an impairment test and a non-cash goodwill charge of about €6bn, to be booked in the third quarter.

Does this affect the Macan Electric I can buy now?

The electric Macan stays on sale, and Porsche says the combustion car will sit beside it. A cheaper-to-make sibling could pressure used values, though we found no residual value data published since the announcement, so that is our judgement.
