Quick answers

  • The Smart #2 is a two-seat electric city car, successor to the Fortwo, due to be revealed in full at the Paris Motor Show, which runs 12 to 18 October 2026.
  • Smart quotes a range of 186 miles and a 10 to 80% charge in under 20 minutes.
  • At 2,792mm long and with a 6.95m turning circle, it is shorter than a Fiat 500e by almost a metre.
  • Smart's Europe CEO has said it could start below €22,500; UK pricing is not confirmed.

Smart is bringing back the two-seater. The Smart #2 replaces the Fortwo as a tiny electric city car and is due to be revealed in full at the Paris Motor Show in October, with a quoted range of 186 miles and an expected on-sale date of early 2027 (Autocar). Smart has not announced a UK price, but its Europe CEO has said it could start below €22,500 in Europe.

What is the Smart #2?

It is a two-seat city car co-developed by Mercedes-Benz and Geely, with Mercedes leading the design and Geely supplying an architecture built around its small size. At 2,792mm long, Autocar says it will be the shortest electric car on sale, shorter than the Fiat 500e by almost a metre (we could not independently confirm that margin).

What do we know about the technology?

The #2 is based on the Electric Compact Architecture, developed by Geely, while Mercedes-Benz oversaw the design. Smart describes it as an ultra-compact A-segment car, and reports say it will be built in China. Smart’s quoted range of nearly 300km WLTP is the 186 miles above, and it will also offer a vehicle-to-load function that lets the battery power external devices, which could suit camping or tools. Autocar’s earlier report on the Fortwo successor is here.

How good is it for city driving?

The 6.95m turning circle is tighter than a London black cab’s turning circle, which should help in tight car parks and narrow terraced streets. The trade-off is obvious: with two seats, it will not suit a family or anyone who regularly carries passengers. For a single commuter or a couple, it gives up space for manoeuvrability. A range of 186 miles and a charge in under 20 minutes is more than most city runs require.

How much will the Smart #2 cost?

Electrive reports that Wolfgang Ufer, Smart’s Europe CEO, said the #2 could start below €22,500 when asked whether it would sit between €20,000 and €25,000. Smart plans to announce pricing at the Paris Motor Show, but a UK price is unconfirmed. We will not guess a sterling figure until it does.

What is still unknown?

Several questions remain until the Paris reveal. Smart has not confirmed UK trims, battery capacity for the production car, boot space or whether British buyers will get the grant. Smart says pricing will come at the show, though not necessarily for the UK, and early 2027 is the on-sale timing Autocar reports for the UK, so there is time between reveal and delivery. We will update this story when the UK price appears.

How does it compare with other small electric cars?

The #2 will enter a market with several small electric cars aimed at city drivers, so its two-seat layout is the main difference. Our guide to the best small electric cars shows the four-seat alternatives, and the cheapest new electric cars list shows where prices start. Also due is the Nissan Pixo, and the Paris Motor Show preview covers what else to watch.

What this means for you

Do not commit to anything yet. Wait for Smart’s UK price and trims, which may come with the Paris reveal, then check whether it qualifies for the Electric Car Grant using our eligible models list. If you need more than two seats, a four-seat city car will serve you better.

How we test and where our numbers come from

Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications. We re-check every guide when pricing, specification or policy changes. Last checked 6 October 2026.
