Quick answers
- Agile Octopus sets a new price for every half hour, published for the next day between 4pm and 8pm.
- Prices can fall below zero, when you are paid to use electricity, and are capped at 100p/kWh including VAT.
- The weekday late afternoon peak is usually the most expensive time; avoiding it is essential.
- It suits households with automation, batteries or flexible routines; most EV drivers do better on a fixed-window EV tariff.
Agile Octopus is different from every other Octopus tariff. Instead of fixed cheap hours, the price changes every half hour, following the wholesale electricity market.
How Agile works
- Each afternoon, usually between 4pm and 8pm, Octopus publishes the prices for each half hour of the next day.
- Your smart meter records when you use electricity, and each half hour is billed at its own price.
- Prices are capped at 100p/kWh including VAT.
- When there is more power on the grid than people are using, prices can fall below zero, and you are paid to use it. Octopus calls these Plunge prices.
- A daily standing charge applies, as on any tariff.
Why it can work for EVs
A car battery is the biggest flexible load most homes have. If your car or charger can follow price signals, you can fill the battery in the cheapest half hours of each night and in any cheap daytime slots, including negative-price periods on windy or sunny days.
The risk: the evening peak
Wholesale prices usually peak in the late afternoon and early evening, when demand is highest. On Agile, cooking, lights and heating at that time can cost far more than on a standard tariff. Households that cannot avoid that peak can easily pay more over the year.
Who it suits
- Homes with a home battery that can charge cheaply and power the house through the peak.
- People who automate devices using Octopus’s public price API or third-party tools.
- Drivers with flexible routines who are happy to check prices daily.
Who should choose something else
If you want to plug in and forget, Intelligent Octopus Go gives a predictable low rate for car charging and six cheap hours for the home without any monitoring. If your car is not compatible with it, Octopus Go gives a fixed five-hour window.
Check before you switch
Look back at your recent half-hourly usage in the Octopus app or your account and see how much falls between 4pm and 7pm. If it is a large share of your use and you cannot move it, Agile is unlikely to be your cheapest option.
How we test and where our numbers come from
Tariff times, rules and rates come from Octopus Energy's own tariff pages and its public price API on the date shown. Off-peak rates quoted are national; day rates and standing charges vary by region, so check your postcode. EV Compared earns a referral reward if you switch through our Octopus links; it does not change what we write. Last checked 28 October 2026. How we work out our own figures.
Frequently asked questions
Is Agile cheaper than Intelligent Octopus Go for charging an EV?
Sometimes, on individual nights. Over a year it depends on wholesale prices and on how much of your other use you can move. Intelligent Octopus Go gives a known low rate for car charging and a guaranteed cheap night window, which is simpler and often cheaper overall.
What are Plunge prices?
Octopus's name for negative prices on Agile. When more electricity is generated than used, prices can drop below zero and you are paid for each unit you use in that half hour.
Is there an exit fee on Agile?
No. Agile Octopus has no exit fee, so you can leave if it is not working for you.
