Quick answers

  • New customers join Octopus on a standard tariff first, then move to an EV tariff.
  • Octopus says it generally takes around 14 days to connect to your smart meter after you switch.
  • You need a SMETS2 or Secure SMETS1 smart meter sending half-hourly readings; Octopus can fit one if you do not have one.
  • For Intelligent Octopus Go, you finish the switch in the Octopus app by connecting your car or charger.

Switching to an Octopus EV tariff is straightforward, but it happens in a set order and takes a few weeks if you are new to Octopus. Here is the route.

Before you start

Have these ready:

  • your postcode and current supplier,
  • a recent meter reading (or your smart meter details),
  • your car registration and charger model, if you want Intelligent Octopus Go,
  • a phone running iOS 14 or later, or Android 7 or later, for the Octopus app.

Step 1: check which tariff you can have

Use the checker on Octopus’s Intelligent Octopus Go page with your car or charger. If neither is supported, Octopus Go works with any car. Not sure? Read which tariff is best?

Step 2: join Octopus

Get a quote and switch. New customers join on a standard tariff first. Your old supplier is closed down automatically; you do not need to contact them.

Step 3: get your smart meter connected

Octopus needs half-hourly readings from a SMETS2 or Secure SMETS1 meter. If you have one, Octopus says it generally takes around 14 days to connect after the switch. If you do not, register for a smart meter installation and Octopus will book one.

Step 4: move to the EV tariff

  • Octopus Go: once Octopus is receiving half-hourly readings, it emails you to accept the terms, and your tariff changes automatically.
  • Intelligent Octopus Go: switch tariff from your account, then in the app confirm your car or charger, accept the terms and authorise Octopus to control charging.

Step 5: set up charging

On Octopus Go, set your car or charger timer to 00:30 to 05:30. On Intelligent Octopus Go, plug in and set your ready-by time and target charge in the app. Check the first few nights. Our smart charging guide has tips.

Adding export

If you have solar, apply for Outgoing Octopus once you are a customer. The export MPAN takes one to four weeks, so start early.

How we test and where our numbers come from

Tariff times, rules and rates come from Octopus Energy's own tariff pages and its public price API on the date shown. Off-peak rates quoted are national; day rates and standing charges vary by region, so check your postcode. EV Compared earns a referral reward if you switch through our Octopus links; it does not change what we write. Last checked 28 October 2026. How we work out our own figures.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I join an EV tariff straight away?

Octopus needs half-hourly readings from your smart meter to bill a time-of-use tariff, and industry rules mean it cannot book a meter installation or take over your meter's data until you are its customer. So you join on a standard tariff first.

What if I don't have a smart meter?

Register your interest with Octopus after you switch and it will contact you to book an installation when an engineer is available in your area.

Will my supply be interrupted when I switch?

No. Switching supplier changes who bills you, not the wires or the meter's supply. A smart meter installation involves a short planned interruption on the day.
