UK has 2.017 million zero-emission cars on the road, DfT says
Zero-emission cars made up 27.3% of new registrations in the second quarter but only 5.8% of the 34.9 million cars in use. Here is why the fleet changes so slowly.
Quick answers
- There were 2,017,000 licensed road-using zero-emission cars in the UK at the end of June 2026, up 34% on June 2025, according to the Department for Transport.
- That is 5.8% of the roughly 34.9 million licensed road-using cars, against 27.3% of new car registrations in April to June.
- A record 147,000 zero-emission cars were registered for the first time in the quarter, up 40.5% year on year.
- Across all vehicle types, 2,313,000 zero-emission vehicles were licensed at the end of June, up 30.7% year on year and up from 2,012,000 in December 2025.
The UK had 2,017,000 licensed zero-emission cars on the road at the end of June 2026, according to new Department for Transport figures, up 34% in a year. They were 5.8% of the roughly 34.9 million licensed road-using cars, even though they took 27.3% of new car registrations in the quarter. For UK drivers, the gap shows that the electric share of the cars you see on the road will keep lagging the share of the cars being sold.
The figures come from the DfT’s vehicle licensing statistics for April to June 2026. This is not the first time electric numbers have passed 2 million. The DfT reported 2,012,000 zero-emission vehicles licensed at the end of December 2025 (Envirotec), and SMMT recorded the two millionth battery-electric registration in April (SMMT).
What do the latest DfT figures show?
| Measure, April to June 2026 | Figure |
|---|---|
| Licensed road-using zero-emission cars (end of June) | 2,017,000 |
| Change on June 2025 | Up 34% |
| Share of licensed road-using cars | 5.8% |
| All licensed road-using cars | About 34.9 million |
| Zero-emission cars first registered in the quarter | 147,000 (up 40.5%) |
| Share of new car registrations | 27.3% |
| Zero-emission light goods vehicles first registered | 8,552 |
Across every vehicle type, 2,313,000 zero-emission vehicles were licensed at the end of June, up 30.7% year on year (MOTester). That compares with 2,012,000 at the end of December 2025, a rise of around 301,000 in six months.
Why is the fleet share so much lower than the sales share?
Because one is a flow and the other a stock. Of roughly 34.9 million cars on the road, only a fraction changes hands as new each year. A quarter of new sales is going electric, but the other 72.7% of new registrations, and the great majority of the existing fleet, are still petrol, diesel or hybrid.
Our calculation from the DfT numbers shows the scale: the 147,000 zero-emission cars registered in the quarter equal about 0.4% of the whole car parc, so it takes years of sales above 25% to move the fleet share much. Even then, the fleet share only follows the sales share with a long delay.
How does September’s record fit in?
September 2026 was the biggest month on record, with 99,199 battery-electric registrations and a 28.3% market share (SMMT). That is higher than the 27.3% zero-emission share for April to June. The September cars will appear in the DfT’s next quarterly figures, for July to September, so the fleet count should climb again. What does this mean for charging and the used market?
The fleet is where demand for public charging and used cars comes from. More than 2 million cars on the road means more drivers relying on public chargers, a point we cover in our guide to what the ZEV mandate means for car buyers.
Growing fleet numbers also feed the used market over time, because today’s new registrations become tomorrow’s second-hand stock. Our market trends guide explains the sales side.
What this means for you
If you are weighing a switch, the numbers say the used and new electric market is deep and growing: more than 2 million are already licensed, so electric cars are well established on UK roads. At the same time, around 94% of cars on UK roads are not zero-emission, so petrol and diesel remain part of daily driving for years yet.
If you are a current owner, expect the public network to stay busy as the fleet grows. Our buying and owning guide covers charging at home before you rely only on public chargers.
How we test and where our numbers come from
Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications. We re-check every guide when pricing, specification or policy changes. Last checked 6 October 2026.
Frequently asked questions
How many electric cars are on UK roads?
The Department for Transport counted 2,017,000 licensed road-using zero-emission cars at the end of June 2026, which is 5.8% of all licensed road-using cars.
Is 2 million a new milestone for UK electric cars?
No. The DfT reported more than 2 million zero-emission vehicles licensed at the end of December 2025, and SMMT recorded the two millionth battery-electric car registration in April 2026.
Why are electric cars only 5.8% of cars on the road when they are over a quarter of new sales?
The UK has about 34.9 million licensed road-using cars, and only a small share is replaced each year. New registrations are a flow, while the fleet is a stock, so the share of cars in use rises slowly.
How fast is the UK electric car fleet growing?
The number of licensed road-using zero-emission cars was up 34% on June 2025, and the quarter's 147,000 first registrations were up 40.5% year on year.
