UK electric car sales hit record 99,199 in September
Battery electric cars took 28.3% of the plate-change month, the best ever for UK EV registrations. The year to date is still 26.2%, well short of this year's 33% ZEV mandate target.
Quick answers
- Battery electric registrations rose 36.3% to a record 99,199 in September 2026, a 28.3% market share, up five percentage points.
- That is almost five new battery electric cars every minute, more than double the rate of three years ago.
- The total new car market grew 12.1% to 350,518, the best September since 2017 and the tenth month of growth in a row.
- Year to date, 454,945 battery electric cars have been registered, a 26.2% share against a 33% ZEV mandate target for 2026.
- The Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling electric car with 9,929 registrations.
Britain registered 99,199 new battery electric cars in September 2026, a record month that took a 28.3% share of the market, according to the SMMT. That is up 36.3% on a year earlier. The catch is that the year to date is still below the level the ZEV mandate asks for, so the record does not close the gap on its own. What did the September figures show?
September is a plate-change month, and the whole market was strong. New car registrations rose 12.1% to 350,518, the best September since 2017 and the tenth month of growth in a row (Motor Trader).
| Measure | September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Total new cars | 350,518 (up 12.1%) |
| Battery electric | 99,199 (up 36.3%) |
| Battery electric share | 28.3% (up five points) |
| Plug-in hybrids | 59,563 (up 55.7%), 17.0% share |
| Electrified vehicles overall | Record 58.4% share |
The SMMT says that equates to almost five new battery electric cars registered every minute, more than double the rate three years ago (Renewable Energy Magazine). We could not find the SMMT publishing any other total; a variant figure of 99,201 circulating in some trade reports does not match its release.
What drove the record?
The SMMT credits unprecedented model choice, especially in smaller segments, compelling discounts and the government’s Electric Car Grant. There are now 178 battery electric models on sale in the UK.
Cheaper cars are doing the work. Some Chinese makers have added their own discounts on top of the grant. The September leaderboard was topped by the Tesla Model 3 with 9,929 registrations, followed by the Model Y with 5,946 registrations and the BYD Sealion 7 (Electrek). Is it enough for the ZEV mandate?
No, not on the headline share. After nine months, 454,945 battery electric cars have been registered, a 26.2% share, significantly below the 33% mandated for 2026 and behind even last year’s 28% target.
| Measure | Share |
|---|---|
| September 2026 | 28.3% |
| Year to date, 2026 | 26.2% |
| Last year’s target | 28% |
| 2026 ZEV mandate target | 33% |
The SMMT continues to argue the targets are too hard to meet, and the mandate is under government consultation until October 2026. Our explainer on the ZEV mandate gap and Q4 discounts goes deeper, and what the mandate means for car buyers covers the rules.
Why this matters beyond the headline
The month shows demand is there when prices come down, but a single plate-change month is not a trend. The pull on registrations in September can leave a quieter run into winter. Makers behind on the target have reason to keep discounting through the fourth quarter. For the wider picture see our EV market sales trends analysis.
What about petrol and hybrid cars?
Plug-in hybrids grew faster than pure electric cars, rising 55.7% to 59,563 registrations. Together, battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars accounted for 45.3% of the market, so more than half of new cars bought in September still had no plug. The record for electrified vehicles overall, at 58.4%, includes conventional hybrids. For a buyer comparing the options, the plug-in hybrid surge shows many drivers are still choosing a halfway step, which is why running-cost comparisons matter.
What this means for you
If you are choosing an electric car now, a market that is chasing a mandate is a buyer’s market. Check whether your shortlist qualifies for the Electric Car Grant using our list of eligible models, and compare dealer discounts before you sign.
Do not assume the discounts will last. Funding for the grant is finite, so read our piece on how long Electric Car Grant funding will last before deciding to wait.
How we test and where our numbers come from
Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications.
