Geely's first UK year: 15,000 cars, 100 dealers and a 45,000 target for 2027

The Chinese brand behind Volvo and Polestar's parent group launched its own cars in the UK a year ago. It now has a Coventry headquarters, a 100th dealer signed and plans to more than double sales next year.

Geely has completed its first year selling Geely-badged cars in the UK, and it wants to more than double its sales in 2027. The Chinese brand says it has registered more than 15,000 cars, built an 80-site dealer network, taken on nearly 100 staff and opened a headquarters at Ansty Business Park near Coventry, according to AM. September was its best month yet, with 5,155 registrations.

Its target for 2027 is 45,000 registrations, with three more models joining its current three-car line-up and up to 140 dealers. For UK buyers, Geely is one of the fastest-growing names in a crowded field of new Chinese brands, and it is part of the same group as Volvo, Polestar and Lotus.

How has Geely done in its first year?

Strongly, by the standards of a brand most UK drivers had not heard of a year ago. The headline figures:

Geely Auto UKFigure
Registrations in first yearMore than 15,000
Best month5,155, September 2026
Full-year 2026 target20,000
2027 target45,000
Dealers at first anniversary80
Dealers by end of 2026100 (contract signed)
Long-term dealer target130 to 140
UK staffNearly 100

Growth has been heavily weighted to recent months. Motor Trade News noted that Geely sold about 5,000 cars in its first 11 months and then about 5,000 in September alone, the number-plate change month.

“Our first year has been one that we can be incredibly proud of,” said Michael Yang, managing director of Geely Auto UK. “But this is only the beginning. Our ambition is not simply to sell cars; it is to build a credible business that earns the trust of customers.”

Who is opening Geely’s 100th dealership?

Lithia UK, the country’s second-largest dealer group, which trades as Evans Halshaw. It will open Evans Halshaw Geely Mansfield as a standalone showroom in the coming months, plus new Geely sites in Newcastle and Glasgow, adding to its existing Geely dealership in Lincoln, according to AM.

“This is of significant strategic importance to Geely Auto as Lithia is the second-largest automotive dealer group in the UK, making this signing a real line in the sand for us,” said Yang. Lithia UK also works with other Chinese brands, including BYD, Changan, Chery and Omoda Jaecoo.

Geely launched with 25 outlets a year ago. It says its priority is not just adding sites but “maximising throughput, viability and profitability for each site”, a sign it wants dealers to make money rather than simply open doors.

What cars does Geely sell in the UK?

Geely currently has three models in the UK and plans three more in 2027. Its UK range has focused on electric and plug-in hybrid SUVs and small cars. Our guide to the Geely EX2’s UK price and range covers its small electric car, and AM reports Geely is adding the Monjaro EM-i plug-in hybrid SUV, which made its European debut at the Paris motor show.

Geely’s electric cars are built in China, so they do not qualify for the UK Electric Car Grant of up to £3,750. Like other Chinese brands, Geely has relied on keen pricing and its own offers instead.

How big is Geely globally?

Very big. Geely Auto Group, which includes the Geely, Zeekr and Lynk & Co brands, sold 292,168 vehicles in September 2026, its highest month of the year, according to its results release. New energy vehicles, meaning EVs and plug-in hybrids, made up 65% of that.

Overseas growth is the striking part. Sales outside China reached 106,685 in September, up 162% year on year, and new energy vehicle exports rose 403%. For the first nine months of 2026, overseas sales hit a record 797,670.

The wider Geely group also owns Volvo Cars, Polestar and Lotus, which gives the Geely brand access to engineering and safety expertise, and connections such as Google built-in software being extended from Volvo and Polestar to more group brands.

Where does Geely fit among Chinese brands in the UK?

Chinese brands took 23.3% of UK new car sales in September 2026, led by BYD, MG and Chery’s Jaecoo and Omoda, as we covered in our September sales analysis. Geely’s 5,155 cars in September put it well behind those leaders but ahead of many newer arrivals.

The field keeps growing. Chery’s iCaur brand arrives in early 2027 and Li Auto in autumn 2027, as we report in our iCaur story and our Li Auto story. With so many brands chasing the same buyers, dealer networks and after-sales support will matter as much as price.

What should buyers consider?

If you are looking at a Geely, the usual checks for a new brand apply:

  • Dealer coverage. With 100 dealers by the end of 2026, Geely’s network is now broad, but check how far you are from a service centre.
  • Warranty. Compare warranty length and battery cover with rivals.
  • Resale values. New brands have less used-market history, so a PCP or lease with a guaranteed future value reduces risk.
  • Tariff risk. The UK is considering aligning with EU tariffs on China-built EVs, as we explain in our Made in Europe report. Any change would take time and affect future prices rather than cars already bought.

How did Geely build a UK network so fast?

By working with established dealer groups rather than building its own showrooms from scratch. Geely launched with 25 outlets in October 2025, reached 80 sites at its first anniversary and has now signed its 100th. Big groups such as Lithia UK, trading as Evans Halshaw, already run sites for several brands, so they can add a new franchise quickly using existing premises, staff and workshops.

That approach is now common among Chinese brands. Lithia UK, for example, also partners with BYD, Changan, Chery and Omoda Jaecoo. It lets a new brand reach buyers across the country within months, but it also means dealers may be selling several competing brands from the same group, so the quality of experience can vary.

Geely says its priority is now quality rather than quantity: making sure each site is viable and profitable. Yang put it this way: “Being successful in the UK and being a credible market player means being part of the UK automotive industry. That means investing in people, working with strong retail partners, providing customers with the support they expect and contributing to the communities in which we operate.”

What is the Geely group?

Geely Auto is part of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, one of China’s largest car companies. The wider group owns or controls a long list of brands, including:

BrandWhat it is
Geely AutoMainstream EVs and plug-in hybrids, now sold in the UK
Volvo CarsSwedish premium brand
PolestarElectric performance brand
LotusBritish sports car maker
ZeekrPremium electric brand
Lynk & CoTech-focused brand with subscription models

That gives Geely-badged cars access to shared platforms, safety know-how and software, such as Google built-in services being extended from Volvo and Polestar to more group brands. It does not mean Geely cars are rebadged Volvos: they are separate products, designed and priced for different buyers.

What is coming next from Geely?

Geely plans three new UK models in 2027, adding to its current three. Its Paris motor show line-up gives clues: the Monjaro EM-i plug-in hybrid SUV, with up to 116km of electric range, and Project KO11, a large plug-in hybrid off-roader due in Europe at the end of 2027. We cover KO11 in our Geely KO11 report.

The mix of electric and plug-in hybrid models reflects how Chinese brands are hedging. Plug-in hybrids appeal to buyers not ready for a full EV, and in the EU they face different trade rules from China-built battery EVs.

Can Geely reach 45,000 in 2027?

It would need to more than double its 2026 total of around 20,000. That is ambitious but not impossible: Geely sold about 5,000 cars in September alone, when number plates change and sales peak. Hitting 45,000 would require strong sales all year, not just in plate-change months, plus the new models arriving on time.

Two things could help: a bigger dealer network reaching 130 to 140 sites, and continuing strong demand for Chinese brands, which took 23.3% of the UK market in September. Two things could hurt: rising competition from other new brands, and possible UK tariffs on China-built EVs.

Our view

Geely’s first year shows how quickly a well-funded Chinese brand can build a UK presence: 15,000 cars, 100 dealers signed and a proper UK headquarters in 12 months. Doubling to 45,000 next year is ambitious, but the September result and the backing of the UK’s second-largest dealer group suggest it is not unrealistic. For buyers, more competition is good news. The brands that last will be those that back their cars with service, not just sharp prices.
