  • Electric vans took an 11.0% share of the UK van market in the year to August 2026, less than half the 24% ZEV mandate target.

Kia has confirmed that the PV5 Chassis Cab will reach the UK only with the 71.2kWh Long Range battery, giving a WLTP range of up to 258 miles and a payload of up to 1,005kg. It is Kia’s first electric chassis cab, and it matters to tradespeople who need a tipper, dropside or box body rather than a panel van. UK pricing has not been announced.

No Plug-in Van Grant or other discount is assumed anywhere below, because no Chassis Cab price exists yet.

What is the Kia PV5 Chassis Cab?

The Chassis Cab is built on Kia’s dedicated electric platform for its PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) range and is the brand’s first fully electric chassis cab (Fleet News). It was developed with European bodybuilders and supports dropside, tipper, box van and refrigerated conversions, while staying under five metres long. In the UK, Kia’s official conversion partner is TGS Automotive Group.

The range, payload and conversion details come from Fleet News and electrive. Charging figures are those Kia quotes for the PV5 range. Payload depends on the body fitted, and some earlier coverage quoted 995kg, so treat 1,005kg as a ceiling rather than a guarantee for every conversion.

Which bodies will TGS build?

TGS will offer a lightweight tipper, a dropside and a box or Luton conversion, planned for the fourth quarter of 2026 (Fleet News). A chassis cab only becomes useful once the body is fitted, so the conversion timing is as important as the vehicle itself. Landscapers, groundworkers and small builders who want a tipper will be the obvious early buyers, but none of these bodies has a published price or payload yet.

Why only the big battery?

Kia will not offer the smaller battery on this body style in the UK (Van Reviewer). The 71.2kWh pack is the same one that gives the PV5 Cargo Long Range panel van a WLTP range of 258 miles. For a working vehicle that may carry a heavy body, the larger battery makes sense on range, though it is likely to cost more than a short-range version would have.

Price and how it compares

Pricing will be revealed later this year. The nearest reference point is the PV5 Cargo panel van. Its Essential trim starts from £27,645 excluding VAT with the standard-range battery and £30,145 with the long-range 71.2kWh battery, both before any Plug-in Van Grant (Drive Electric). How the Chassis Cab will be priced against those figures, and what a conversion will add, is not yet known.

The market backdrop

Electric vans are growing but remain short of the mandate. In August 2026 electric van registrations rose 25.9% to 2,395 with a record 16.3% market share, but the year-to-date share was 11.0%, less than half the 24% ZEV mandate target for 2026 (TransportXtra). More body options help close that gap, because trades that cannot use a panel van have had few electric choices. What this means for you

If you run a tipper or dropside today, do not order anything yet. Wait for Kia’s UK price, the TGS body prices and confirmed payloads, then work out whether 258 miles WLTP covers your longest day with a loaded body, since real range will be lower. Check whether the Plug-in Van Grant applies once pricing is out, and weigh the tax benefits for electric van businesses. How we test and where our numbers come from

Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications. We re-check every guide when pricing, specification or policy changes. Last checked 6 October 2026.
