MG2 electric supermini: £20,000 expected ahead of 2027 UK sales
MG plans to reveal its MG2 city EV in the second half of 2026, with UK sales expected from 2027 at around £20,000. Here is what the MG GO! concept tells us, and what is still speculation.
Quick answers
- MG says it will unveil the MG2 in the second half of 2026, with UK sales not expected until 2027.
- The MG GO! concept shown at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed previews the production car, which should tone down many of the concept's aggressive details.
- The MG2 is expected to cost from around £20,000, with some reports saying sub-£20,000. No UK price is confirmed.
- Reports suggest 43kWh or 54kWh batteries and up to 258 miles of range, but the platform is reported differently by different outlets.
- The MG4 Urban, the cheapest MG EV today, costs from £23,495, so the MG2 would sit about £3,500 below it at £20,000.
MG plans to unveil the MG2, a small electric hatchback that will be its cheapest EV, in the second half of 2026, with sales in 2027 (Electrive). The expected price is around £20,000, though MG has not confirmed one. For UK drivers, that would put a new MG below the £23,495 MG4 Urban and into the price race alongside the Leapmotor B03 and Renault 5.
What is the MG GO! concept?
The MG2 was previewed by the MG GO! concept at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed. It is a B-segment electric hatchback whose styling draws on MG’s past models, including the MGB GT, the MG Metro Turbo and the MG ZR, and many of its aggressive details are expected to be toned down for the production car (Vertu Motors). MG also showed a Cyber concept SUV at the same event (Electric Cars Report).

Nothing in the last three rows has come from MG as a confirmed UK specification. Our new electric cars 2027 tracker keeps the same status. Where a figure comes from a single outlet, we name it in the text so you can judge it.
How much will the MG2 cost?
Auto Express expects the MG2 at around £20,000, and other reports say sub-£20,000. We treat it as an estimate. The comparison that matters is the MG4 Urban, which starts at £23,495 (Motorpoint), so a £20,000 MG2 would sit about £3,500 below it. MG’s Chinese rivals are close behind: see our Leapmotor B03 report.
What platform will it use?
Reports disagree. Electrive says it will likely use the E3 platform of the MG4 Urban and adopt its cabin design. Vertu Motors says it will ride on the same Modular Scalable Platform as the MG4, suggesting rear-wheel drive, with 43kWh or 54kWh batteries and up to 258 miles. Both cannot be right, and MG has not settled the question publicly, so treat the drivetrain and range as speculation until the production reveal.
Why does the MG2 matter?
MG broke 18,000 UK sales in a month for the first time in September, as our MG sales report covers. An entry model below the MG4 Urban would give it a cheaper way in for new buyers. The concept’s retro references to the MGB GT and Metro Turbo also point to MG leaning on its British heritage, as the Renault 5 and Mini Cooper Electric do with their own pasts (Vertu Motors).
How does it fit the price race?
At around £20,000, the MG2 would sit under most of the small EVs on sale today. The Renault 5 starts at £21,495 after the Electric Car Grant, and our sub-£20,000 electric cars guide lists the models trying to break that barrier. If you are comparing today’s options, see our cheapest new EVs you can buy list. One thing to check when MG publishes prices is whether the MG2 qualifies for the government Electric Car Grant, which would lower the real price further. That has not been announced.
What this means for you
If you want a small EV now, buy one of the models on sale: the MG2 will not reach buyers before 2027. If you can wait until next summer, hold your decision until MG publishes a UK price, trims and a grant ruling, because the platform and range reports do not agree. Our buy now or wait guide explains how to weigh the wait. Until then, £20,000 is a target and not a price.
How we test and where our numbers come from
Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications. We re-check every guide when pricing, specification or policy changes. Last checked 6 October 2026.
