British-built electric cars: which UK-made EVs you can buy
The Nissan Leaf and Range Rover Electric are on sale now, the Jaguar Type 01 is due in 2027, and BMW's electric Minis for Oxford are on hold. Here is what is actually made in Britain.
Quick answers
- The Nissan Leaf is built in Sunderland and priced from £28,849 for the 52kWh Engage, or from £32,249 for the 75kWh Engage, in both cases with the £3,750 Electric Car Grant applied.
- The Range Rover Electric is built at Solihull and is on sale from £154,070, with a 118.5kWh battery and up to 372 miles of WLTP range.
- The Jaguar Type 01 is due to be built at Solihull and is revealed on 6 October 2026, with customer cars expected in the first half of 2027.
- BMW put a £600m plan for electric Minis at Oxford on hold in February 2025 and declined a £60m government grant, so no electric Mini is made there.
- Nissan signed a non-binding agreement in June 2026 to explore building Chery cars at Sunderland from its 2027 financial year.
Only a handful of electric cars are made in Britain, and just two cars a private buyer can order today are built here: the Nissan Leaf, from £28,849 after the Electric Car Grant, and the Range Rover Electric, from £154,070. The Jaguar Type 01 is due to be revealed today but will not reach customers until 2027, while BMW’s plan to build electric Minis in Oxford is on hold. For UK drivers, the Leaf matters most, because British production helps it qualify for the top £3,750 grant.

Nissan Leaf: the affordable one
The third-generation Nissan Leaf is built at Sunderland (Auto Express). The Engage with the 75kWh battery costs £32,249, the Engage+ £33,149 and the Advance £34,249, with all prices reflecting the £3,750 Electric Car Grant (Motoring Research). A smaller 52kWh Engage starts at £28,849, also grant-qualifying (Nissan Insider).
Batteries come from AESC’s second Sunderland factory, which opened in December 2025 with an initial 15.8GWh of annual capacity (electrive). Short supply chains are why a British build matters for grant eligibility; see who qualifies for the grant.
Range Rover Electric: built at Solihull, priced like a luxury car
The Range Rover Electric is on sale from £154,070, about £47,000 more than the entry-level petrol version. It has a 118.5kWh battery, twin 260kW motors, up to 372 miles of WLTP range and 800-volt charging, and is made at Solihull (The EV Report). Our Range Rover Electric price and orders article covers the trims. The cheaper Range Rover Sport Electric opened for orders on 30 September 2026 from £109,810, but deliveries start in 2027; see our Range Rover Sport Electric price report.
Jaguar Type 01: revealed, not yet on sale
The Type 01 four-door grand tourer makes its global debut in New York on 6 October 2026, with a targeted range of up to 478 miles. What Car? reports it will be built at Solihull with batteries assembled at Wolverhampton, and arriving in the UK in the first half of 2027. Pricing was only expected, at around £120,000, before the reveal. Read our Type 01 reveal and price report.
LEVC taxis: British, but not pure EVs
LEVC builds the TX at Ansty Park in Coventry, with up to 78 miles of electric range and 333 miles in total using its range extender (Automotive World). LEVC passed 10,000 vehicles built in 2023 (Transport & Energy). It is a working vehicle rather than a private purchase, so it sits outside most buyers’ shortlists. LEVC has also confirmed a new black cab for 2027.
What has stalled
BMW confirmed in February 2025 that it was delaying electric production at Oxford, citing “multiple uncertainties”, putting a £600m investment on hold and declining a £60m government grant (The Manufacturer). Oxford continues to build petrol Minis.
At Sunderland, Nissan signed a non-binding agreement on 3 June 2026 to explore building Chery cars on its Line 1, starting in its 2027 financial year (electrive). Nissan is consolidating Sunderland production on one line, with the Leaf, Qashqai and Juke built on the newer Line 2 (electrive). The electric Juke is due in spring 2027 with price and grant status unconfirmed, and the electric Qashqai has been suspended; see Nissan’s Sunderland investment. Our Britain’s gigafactory gamble piece covers the battery side.
What this means for you
If you want a British-built EV today and have a normal budget, the Leaf is the only realistic choice, and its price already includes the grant. Check the latest eligible models before ordering. The Range Rover Electric suits a far narrower buyer. Do not wait for an electric Mini from Oxford, as there is no date for one.
How we test and where our numbers come from
Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications. We re-check every guide when pricing, specification or policy changes. Last checked 6 October 2026.
