Electric Defender UK: when it arrives and JLR's EV line-up

A small electric Defender is due in 2027, but the full-size one has slipped to the early 2030s. Here is what JLR will actually sell, from the £154,070 Range Rover Electric to Freelander.

Quick answers

  • The full-size electric Defender has reportedly been delayed from 2028 or 2029 to the early 2030s, because the current D7x platform cannot easily hold a big battery.
  • A smaller Defender Sport is the first electric Defender, due in 2027 and built at Halewood on JLR's new 800V EMA platform, with a hybrid version added to the line-up.
  • The Range Rover Electric starts at £154,070 with up to 372 miles of range, and the Range Rover Sport Electric starts at £109,810, about £44,260 less.
  • The Freelander brand is a Chery and JLR joint venture. Some outlets report a UK launch in the second half of 2027, but JLR's chief executive says the UK decision is Chery's.

There is no electric Defender yet, and the full-size one is not coming soon. JLR has confirmed a smaller Defender for 2027, but reports say the big Defender’s electric version has slipped to the early 2030s. For UK drivers who want a Land Rover with a plug, the real choices are the new Range Rover Electric from £154,070 and the Range Rover Sport Electric from £109,810.

Why is the electric Defender delayed?

Electrive reports that JLR has moved the next-generation full-size Defender, and with it the electric version, from 2028 or 2029 to the early 2030s. The current Defender, launched in 2020, sits on the aluminium D7x platform, which was built for combustion and hybrid power. Reports say its underbody lacks the space for a battery with enough range, so only the next generation will take an electric drivetrain.

The commercial reason is simpler. Carscoops headlined the story as a delay “because the gas one won’t stop selling”, and electrive reports roughly 110,000 Defenders a year, about a third of JLR’s volume. Waiting protects that.

What is the smaller Defender Sport?

The first electric Defender is the smaller one. JLR has said a smaller Defender Sport will use its EMA platform. Autocar says it should measure around 4.6m long, arrive in 2027 and sit below the full-size Defender on price. It will be built at Halewood on Merseyside, where £500 million is going into the plant, on an 800V platform with in-house motors.

JLR first planned it as electric only, but Autocar reports it will also get a hybrid to reach sufficient volumes. No UK price or range has been confirmed.

Prices are list prices before any Electric Car Grant. The Range Rover Electric has twin motors giving 542bhp and charges from 10 to 80% in 22 minutes on a suitably powerful rapid charger, according to Which EV. The First Edition is from £157,610.

Is the Range Rover Sport Electric the smarter buy?

The Range Rover Sport Electric costs £109,810 for the Dynamic SE, £122,780 for the Autobiography and £126,290 for the First Edition, with 550PS and 850Nm from dual 260kW motors (PistonHeads). That is £44,260 less than the £154,070 Range Rover Electric, with a similar quoted range (up to 378 miles WLTP against 372, and about 333 miles in Range Rover’s real-world estimate for the Sport), so the Sport is the better value if you do not need the larger body. The catch is timing: Sport deliveries start in early 2027, while the Range Rover is expected to reach buyers this quarter.

Both are far above the price of most of the cars in our best electric cars for former SUV and 4x4 drivers, and our long-range electric SUVs guide lists cheaper models with comparable range.

What about Freelander and Jaguar?

Freelander is not a Land Rover you will buy from JLR. It is a brand run by the Chery and JLR joint venture in China. Autocar reports it is confirmed for the UK with EV Powered and Auto Express citing the second half of 2027, though JLR’s chief executive has said the decision is Chery’s and no importer has been named. Its first model, the Freelander 8, is a roughly 5.1m SUV on an 800V architecture with up to 350kW charging, offered as electric, range-extender and plug-in hybrid, so it is not electric only.

On the Jaguar side, the Type 01 electric GT targets 478 miles, and our report on JLR job cuts covers what 4,000 fewer roles mean for the EV programme.

What this means for you

If you want an electric Defender, wait for the Defender Sport in 2027 and do not expect a full-size one this decade. If you want a large electric Land Rover now, the Range Rover Sport Electric offers the same 118.5kWh, 550PS hardware for £44,260 less, but you will wait until 2027. The Range Rover Electric is the only one expected to be delivered this year. We will update this page when JLR confirms Defender Sport prices, UK Freelander plans or Range Rover Electric delivery dates.

How we test and where our numbers come from

Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications. We re-check every guide when pricing, specification or policy changes. Last checked 6 October 2026.

When will the full-size electric Defender arrive?

Reports in August 2026 said JLR has pushed it from 2028 or 2029 to the early 2030s. Electrive reports the current aluminium D7x platform lacks the underbody space for a battery with enough range, so an electric version needs the next generation.

How much is the Range Rover Electric?

UK prices start at £154,070 for the Autobiography, with the First Edition from £157,610. Both prices are before any Electric Car Grant. First deliveries are expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.

What is the cheapest electric Range Rover?

The Range Rover Sport Electric Dynamic SE at £109,810, against £122,780 for the Autobiography and £126,290 for the First Edition. Deliveries are scheduled for early 2027.

Is the Freelander coming to the UK?

The Freelander brand, a Chery and JLR joint venture, is reported to be heading to the UK, with EV Powered and Auto Express citing the second half of 2027. JLR's chief executive PB Balaji has said the brand is Chery's and JLR will not stop it. Autocar's report said no importer has been named, and we could not confirm a firm UK date.
